Grasscloth is a natural fabric made by weaving together the fibers from renewable plants, such as agave, arrowroot, bamboo, hemp, jute, ramie, sisal, and more. At Bungalow 5, grasscloth has become one of our staple materials--simultaneously organic and polished, grasscloth pieces make a striking textural addition to any space.

The eco-friendly and low-energy production process starts once the plants are harvested. The plant fibers are laid out to dry in the sun and are later bundled by hand to be transported to a dying station.

Every bundle of fiber is hand-dyed and no two pieces of fiber are exactly the same so slight variations in color make every finished piece of grasscloth unique. The bundles are dipped into vats of dye made from natural ingredients and pigments then laid in the sun to dry again.

Once the dye has set, the fibers are ready to be woven into grasscloth. This complicated process uses thin cotton threads and sea grass strands to weave the fibers together on a loom. A lightweight backing, such as rice paper, is then affixed to the woven material. The finished product is a naturally beautiful and delicate grasscloth that can be used to make wallpaper, rugs, or give added texture to furniture pieces.

Grasscloth is known for its durability, versatility, and natural construction. Because of these qualities, grasscloth has become a popular choice in décor featuring eco-friendly or green design elements. The variations in color and texture offer a refreshing change from the flat colors and finishes that are commonplace in the world of furniture. At Bungalow 5, we take great pride in our inimitable stunning lacquered grasscloth finishes that bring a sophisticated touch of nature to any home.
